Will Green Coffee Beans help you lose weight?
Since Dr. Oz promoted Green Coffee Beans on his TV show,
Green Coffee Beans have been a popular weight loss supplement.
According to Dr. Oz, it is "the green coffee bean that burns fat fast"
and he claims that no exercise or diet is needed.
Actually it is the chlorogenic acid in the coffee beans that helps
you to lose weight, Roasting removes most of the chlorogenic
acid, so unroasted green beans are used.
The chlorogenic acid that is extracted is thought to help manage
blood sugar and metabolism.
Green coffee bean extract does contain some caffeine.
Caffeine has been shown in several studies to increase metabolism
by 3 to 11%. (A)
Several studies have been made on green coffee extract,
which is the main ingredient for weight loss in green coffee
bean supplements.
In a 12 week randomized controlled study of 30 overweight people (B),
one group was given regular instant coffee, the other was given
instant coffee with 200mg with no change in diet or exercise for either group.
The regular coffee group lost 3.7 pounds and lost 0.7% body fat.
The Green Coffee Extract group lost 11.9 pound and lost 3.6% body fat.
The conclusion: "We conclude that chlorogenic acid enriched instant coffee
appears to have a significant effect on the absorption and utilization of
glucose from the diet. This effect, if the coffee is used for an extended time,
may result in reduced body mass and body fat when compared with the
use of normal instant coffee." (B)
Weight loss is not the only benefit:
Green coffee is also used to help with diabetes, high blood pressure,
Alzheimer's disease, and bacterial infections.
