Michael Phelps talks about his struggle with anxiety | Today
Michael Phelps is best known for winning eight gold medals for swimming in the summer Olympics. He is also known for claiming that his diet included a whopping 12,000 calories per day.
Phelps is 6' 4" and weighs about 200 pounds. His diet claim would mean that he would be consuming nearly 4,000 calories per meal. In an article by the NY Times, according to Phelps, this is what his 12,000 calorie day included:
He began his day with three fried egg sandwiches with lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, fried onions and cheese. After downing the sandwiches, he would have a five egg omelet with grits and French toast (three slices) and chocolate chip pancakes (three) and a couple of cups pf coffee.
For lunch, Micheal says he has a pound of pasta along with two ham and cheese sandwiches on white bread with lots of mayo and he finishes the meal off with about 1,000 calories in energy drinks.
For dinner, Michael says he eats a whole pizza and another pound of pasta. Michael washes this down with another 1,000 calories in energy drinks.
To put this diet in perspective, the average person eats about 2,000 calories per day.
Michael Phelps 12k calorie diet
Later, in an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Michael said, "I never ate that much, it's all a myth. I've never eaten that many calories. I wish. It's just too much though, it would be impossible."
Michael reveals that when he is training he eats more, when he is not training, he eats less. When he was in his heaviest training, Micheal says that although he did not consume 12,000 calories daily, he was still ingesting 8,000 to 10,000 calories which is still an enormous amount of food.
A typical day of eating for Michael might look like this:
For breakfast he might eat oatmeal and fresh fruit, an omelet with ham and cheese and coffee.
Michael's lunch might consist of a 12" meatball sub from Subway
His dinner could be a plate or two of a lean meat with vegetables and whole grains.

Conclusion:
The Michael Phelps diet is not a real diet, of course. Although 12,000 calories a day would difficult to impossible, even 8,000 calories daily is about 4 times more than average. If the diet were real, I would give it a thumbs down because it is two high in calories. Is your diet too high in calories? If so, our website can help you.

About 30 years ago, I and my family were in a serious flash flood. A dam broke from rainfall of over 6"in a matter of hours. The water rose about 4 feet ABOVE the height of the ceiling of our apartment.
Somehow, almost immediately, the public auditorium was set up as a shelter and filled with beds, linens, towels, clothes and more...thank you Salvation Army.
In addition, bags loaded with needed toiletries such as tooth paste, tooth brush, razors, shaving cream and so on were available to all of us who were suddenly displaced flood victims. Thank you Red Cross.
I am still appreciative for such kindness and still shocked at how response was so rapid. These two causes are the best!
