Dr Oz Talks to Jill Blakeway about Ear Acupuncture
Ear Stapling For Weight Lossis a procedure where tiny stainless steel surgical staples are put into the inner cartilage in each ear. Ear stapling comes from an acupuncture tradition called auricular acupuncture. Needles are placed at certain points to curb addictions and cravings, to promote improvement in general health, and to control appetite. Controlling appetite leads to weight loss.
Some people call it crazy or absurd, others swear by it. This kind of acupuncture is rather straight forward. An acupuncturist uses a specialized staple gun to pierce a piece of exposed cartilage at the outer ear. The staples can remain in place for weeks or months. After about three to four months the body will get used to the staple so it may need to be repositioned. At this point, however, the 'pathway' should be opened and the body should have established balance, so a re-application should not be necessary.
Ear staples may produce some pain but not excruciating. Some recipients say it hurts for a few minutes, others say it does not hurt at all. The cost should run about $35 to $75 per ear. Most practitioners will recommend that you staple both ears for maximum effect.
Does Ear Stapling for Weight Loss Work?
Two studies indicate that ear stapling can help you to lose weight.
The 91 people were made up of 16 male and 75 female who had a BMI of 23 or higher, and who had no weight loss treatment within the last 6 months. The 91 were randomly divided into 3 groups. Group 1 receive acupuncture at 5 ear acupuncture points, Group 2 at the hunger acupuncture point and the sham group received acupuncture at the 5 ear acupuncture points but the needles were removed immediately. The study ran 8 weeks.
During the study, weight, waist circumference, BMI, body fat mass (BFM), percentage body fat and blood pressure were measured at the beginning and at week 4 and week 8.
For the 58 people that provided results:
Group 1 and 2 had a 6.1% and 5.7% reduction in BMI! The sham group showed no significant differences.
The conclusion per the study was "This finding suggests that the five ear acupuncture points, generally used in Korean clinics, and the Hunger point alone treatment are both effective for treating overweight people."
In another studydoi:10.1016/j.ctim.2013.10.002 of 56 obese women with a BMI greater than 25, a randomized group received auricular electro acupuncture the other received a placebo dummy electro auricular acupuncture. The Hunger, Stomach and Colon points were used. Over 6 weeks the true acupuncture group showed real results compared to the placebo group.

How Does Ear Stapling for Weight Loss Work?
Acupuncture believers claim that ear stapling at the Zero Point location, in particular, will curb your appetite as well as reduce stress and increase your metabolism. Auricular acupuncture is also believed to eliminate migraines, remove cravings such as nicotine or drug addiction and end insomnia.
Other practitioners claim that ear staples in the right areas of the ear will release endorphins, a pleasure chemical. The pleasure effect lowers anxiety and stress which play a big part in over eating.
The theory, in ancient practices and in modern derivations, is that stimulating certain points on the body with needles or pressure from fingers will open or clear a direct channel or nerve pathway. Parts of the external ear are said to stimulate the abdominal organs and the stomach.

Risk:
Apparently the biggest risk in ear stapling is infection. Should you decide to try this procedure, make sure that your ear stapling conditions are sanitary.
Taking care of your ear staples is the same as taking care of any piercing. Your practitioner should provide a set of instructions for you to follow.
Conclusion:
Although a solid scientific explanation does not seem to be available, the ancient ways often prove themselves to work. The fact that two randomized studies both conclude that weight loss was a direct result of auricular acupuncture is most encouraging.

My initial response to ear stapling to lose weight was that it was a hoax or a scam. The more that I have researched this form of weight loss, the less of a skeptic that I have become.
I am reminded of the quote credited to Frank Zappa ~ "A mind is like a parachute, it doesn't work unless it's open."
My recommendation is that you want to keep an open mind about ear stapling to lose weight or any other reasonable method that might work to help you to lose weight.
Thank you for reading, my friends. I wish you success on your weight loss journey.

Ear Stapling To Lose Weight
The practice of auricular acupuncture is ancient. The practice of ear stapling is at least 20 years old.
The acupuncuturist or practitioner knows from experience and training exactly where to insert the staple. In addition, he/she has a point probe tool which assures that the staple will be in the right location.
The staples will remain for up to 3 to 4 months. A staple re-insertion is not likely to be needed. This means that the benefits should be long lasting.

About 30 years ago, I and my family were in a serious flash flood. A dam broke from rainfall of over 6"in a matter of hours. The water rose about 4 feet ABOVE the height of the ceiling of our apartment.
Somehow, almost immediately, the public auditorium was set up as a shelter and filled with beds, linens, towels, clothes and more...thank you Salvation Army.
In addition, bags loaded with needed toiletries such as tooth paste, tooth brush, razors, shaving cream and so on were available to all of us who were suddenly displaced flood victims. Thank you Red Cross.
I am still appreciative for such kindness and still shocked at how response was so rapid. These two causes are the best!
