The Omni Die
t is a diet created by Tana Amen, RN.  In her book, The Omni Diet: The Revolutionary 70% Plant + 30% Protein Program to Lose Weight, Reverse Disease, Fight Inflammation and Change Your Life Forever, she claims that you will lose 12 pounds in 2 weeks.  The diet is about 70% plant based and 30% protein.  The idea is that Tana has come up with an ideal blend of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, fish, and lean protein.  Tana used this diet to treat her own digestive troubles, infections, and thyroid cancer.   The diet claims that this diet will help you to nutritiously fuel your body in order to stay healthy, as well as to combat illness and disease.  As a bonus, you will lose weight.

Omni Diet Phases

The Omni Diet has four stages.  The first 3 stages are 2 weeks each, then the fourth stage is maintenance.

Stage 1:  Detox Phase:

This stage is rather abrupt.  You will make a number of changes rather than ease into them. In this stage you will set up your household for her 70-30 food ratio and remove foods that are unhealthy.  Stage 1 lasts for two weeks and you should follow the following rules:

Add an extra workout using weights once a week.
Drink at least one green shake two time per week.
Visit the sauna to detoxify two times per week.
Have someone to be accountable to.
Engage in gratitude: find five things daily that you are thankful for.

The following foods are what you can eat:

Fresh, organic vegetables - this does NOT include white potatoes
Lean meat, fish, and poultry
Raw nuts and seeds
Small amounts of fruits, mostly berries
Certain oils, including  coconut, almond, olive, macadamia nut, and grapeseed
Cage-free, organic eggs
Herbs and spices, both fresh and dried
Small amounts of dried beans and lentils

Natural organic whole foods are preferred.

What you cannot eat:

No soy-based products.
No animal products, except lean meat and organic eggs.
No vegetable oils high in Omega 6.
No processed  foods or processed as little as possible.
No refined sugars.
No artificial sweeteners except for small amounts of Stevia.
No carbohydrates
No fruit juices.
No dairy.
No corn
Animal protein only from allowed sources.

Supplements are suggested, especially fish oil.

Stage 2:  Pump Up Phase

The basis of stage 2 is to ramp up your efforts and to start a food journal to help you to keep old habits from sneaking back into your diet.

Stage 3:  Relax Your Way To Better Health Phase

In stage 3, Amen allows you to vary from the 70-30 guidelines about 10% of the time.  You will be able to add in small amounts of grains and legumes if you choose to do so.   You can add 2 alcohol drinks per week, but no sugary drinks or drinks with gluten.  You can have up to three bites of forbidden foods in your 10% time off.   Treats at social affairs are allowed, but with proper planning.   Continue to avoid any foods that may cause health problems.

Stage 4:  Moving Forward Phase

This stage is the maintenance stage.  It is essentially a continuation of stage 3 but for life.

Conclusion:

The Omni Diet is a healthy lifestyle change which can help you to lose weight.  I give the Omni Diet a thumbs up but I am reluctant to recommend it to most people.  My reluctance is simply due to the level of difficulty, otherwise, it is a great diet.  If your present diet is poor, the Omni Diet may be too difficult.  In addition, if meal planning and preparation is an issue or if giving up dairy or sugar is a major hurdle, perhaps the Omni Diet is not for you.

Thank you for reading, my friends.  I wish you success on your weight loss journey.

Kind regards,
George Pierce
