What is a Macrobiotic Diet?

The idea behind a macrobiotic diet is that it will help prevent disease and cure disease.   This includes diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.   The reasoning is that food has the most influence on our health, thus the right diet can help us achieve optimal health.

A Macrobiotic Diet is not just about losing weight!

This diet is about achieving a healthier and more holistic lifestyle.  It is based on 'traditional Chinese medicine' beliefs that one can balance their yin and yang through environment and the body.   Believers in the diet encourage eating natural healthy whole foods which are good for our bodies and the environment.  The diet is said to be in harmony with nature.

The macrobiotic diet is considered to be a 'fad diet' by most experts.  A fad diet is one that claims weight loss and/or health benefits without scientific proof.  Macrobiotic diets became popular in the 1960s as a cult diet or counter culture diet.

How Does It Work?

Macrobiotics is based on foods drawn from Zen Buddhism.  The diet is founded on balancing yin and yang  by reducing animal products, eating locally grown foods in season, and eating in moderation.  The diets is centered on beans, whole grains and vegetables.  Although there is no scientific evidence that the diet can cure or prevent cancer, the American Cancer Society seems to agree that a low fat, high fiber, plant based diet lowers the risk of heart disease and some forms of cancer.

What you can eat:

  • Whole grains make up about half of the diet.  These should be organic and local.  Whole grains include corn, oats, barley, millet, and brown rice.
  • Vegetables that are locally grown make up about 25% of the diet.
  • Beans and bean products account for about 5-10% if the diet.  Bean products include foods such as tofu, agar, nori, sea vegetables, tempeh, miso, and seaweed.
  • Fish and seafood along with fruit and nuts and pickles are allowed once or twice a week.
  •  Rice syrup which is a sweetener is allowed on occasion,

Conclusion:

The Macrobiotic diet may be considered a 'fad diet', but it is a healthy diet with long term aspirations.  If you love meats or have a sweet tooth, this diet may not work for you.  Meat lovers may have a problem with the diet.  If you do not like to plan, prepare, or cook your meals, this diet is not for you.  The diet is a healthy diet, but based on its restrictions and difficulty, I do not recommend that most people should add the Macrobiotic diet to their list of weight loss options.

Thank you for reading, my friends.  i wish you success on your weight loss journey.
