Living Low Carb

Living Low Carb is by Fran McCullough.  Fran is a cookbook editor and writer who struggled to lose weight.  Her answer is a low carb diet.   Her Living Low Carb Book is a summary of low carb diets.

In her book, she covers low carb diets such as the Atkins Diet and the Paleo diet and explains their benefits.  Also included are a list of low carb recipes along with helpful tips on shopping, eating out, and traveling.

What is a low carb diet?

Low carb diets limit the number of carbs (carbohydrates) that we can have.  Your carb range will be from no carbs to about 30 grams per day.  The lower the range the more weight you should lose.

Healthy fats are recommended such as avocado, olive oil, and nut vs. cheese and butter.

Whole raw foods are important.  Fresh, organic, and raw are preferred.

A low carb diet includes protein at every meal.  The rule of thumb is to eat about .5 grams of protein for every pound you weigh.  This means that your protein consumption will probably be between 60 and 120 grams, depending on your weight.

Water is an essential part of a low carb diet.  At least 8 or more 8 oz. glasses per day.  Water will help you feel fuller and will help flush toxins.

Most low carb diets avoid what are called 'white foods'.  White foods refer to foods that are white and high in carbs such as rice, flour, potatoes, and sugar.

Exercise:  Exercise is recommended.

Vegan or Vegetarian?  Being a restrictive diet to start with, vegans and vegetarians may find it difficult to make this work.

Gluten Free?  Low carb does not mean gluten free.  You will need to read labels.

Cost?  Your food cost should stay about the same.

Low Carb Diet Side Effects:

Low carb diet can have side effects such as diarrhea or constipation, low energy or fatigue, weakness,  headache, and bad breath.  You should also consult with your doctor if you have gout, diabetes, or high blood pressure.  High protein and low carb can cause problems for some people.

Conclusion:

The diet can help you to lose weight, but it is not a long term approach and has several disturbing side effects.  The book has some great tips, recipes, and can be most helpful for those of you that choose low carb.  I do not give it a thumbs down, but I do not recommend that you add it to your list of weight loss options.

Thank you for reading, my friends.  I wish you success on your weight loss journey.

Kind regards,
George Pierce
