The Flat Belly Diet says that we can eat fat and lose weight. This diet is by Liz Vaccariello and Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD, and targets belly fat. How does it work? The Flat Belly Diet claims that you can lose up to 15 pounds in 32 days, and that you will lose belly fat. You can eat fat, but the fat that you can eat is monounsaturated fat. This kind of fat is that kind that comes from plants such as olive oil. The Theory is that monosaturated fats (MUFAs) attack belly fat. MUFAs also are thought to help you to feel full and therefore help you to not over eat. The overall strategy is that you can have four meals per day at 400 calories each, thus a total of 1600 calories per day. You need to eat every four hours and have monounsaturated fats with each meal. Your first four days restrict you to 1200 calories and no added salt, no processed foods, no gassy foods such as onions, broccoli, and beans, and high carbs such as bananas, pasta, and bagels. You also need to drink two liters of water that is mixed with cucumber, ginger root, mint leaves, and lemon. Vaccariello and Sass call this mixture, sassy water. Following your first four days, your diet becomes a Mediterranean style diet for the next 28 days at 1600 calories a day. This diet is a low fat, low salt diet. In fact, you should not salt anything and you should read the label to determine the sodium content. Exercise is not mandatory, but a 'flat belly workout' is included in the book. Your overall grocery cost should not see any change. The diet's key ingredients are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish and olive oil. Positives: Lower bad cholesterol Lower your risk of heart attack or stroke Lower bllod pressure Lower blood sugar levels Lower cholesterol Healthy diet. You shold feel better, lokk better, and lose weight. Lots of recipes Online member site is available (not free..about $15 to $20/month) Negatives: This diet is difficult for the first four days. You will need to plan and prepare meals. Long term may be difficult. No in person meetings. There is no evidence that MUFAs target belly fat. Does it work? Yes. Fifteen pounds in 32 days may be a stretch, but a 1600 calorie diet for most people should result in weight loss. Conclusion: The diet is difficult for the first four days, 1200 calories is not easy. After the first four days, it eases up into a healthy eating plan. I like the diet, it is very healthy, I give it a thumbs up, but I am reluctant to recommend it. The reason is partly that it may be hard for many to get over the four day hurdle, but mostly that it may fail you long term. If you like this diet, you may want to look at the Medterranean Diet.
