If you love carbs, the following article is meant to offer you a list of heavenly carb delights (alternatives) that you can eat! And that you can ENJOY! White Bread: White bread is pretty much an absolute no no, but there is at least one source of white bread that impresses. It is Dave's Killer Bread White Bread Done Right (should be available at Walmart and Sam's Club). One slice of Dave's White Bread has 3 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber. Sara Lee Classic White Bread has 2 grams of protein and zero fiber. Granola: (and Yogurt) Granola is a lot like yogurt, in that we think that it is GOOD for us, but not all yogurt and not all granola is the same. The fact is that you and I MUST read the labels! WHY? Sugar, many brands have tons of added sugar. You may be shocked to learn that some of our healthy granola (about 3/4 cup) and yogurt (one serving) are not healthy since they pack about 18 grams of sugar! Most Greek Yogurts have about 5 to 6 grams of sugar, but you still want to read the label, since some are much higher. Dannon Fit and Light has about 2 grams of sugar. 18 Rabbits Veritas Granola (sweetened with honey and molasses) has 4 grams of sugar per 3 oz. and Nature's Path Pumpkin Flax plus Granola has 10 grams of sugar per 3/4 cup. Cereal: Most cereals are high in sugar and low in health value. Most cereals should not be eaten! They have been stripped of fiber and coated with chemically created vitamins and minerals. Look for cereals that are low in sugar and high in fiber. Consider Kellogg's All Bran, Kix, Post Shredded Wheat, Spoon Size Wheat 'n Bran, and Barbara's Original Puffins. Pasta: Regular pasta is made from white flour. This means that regular pasta will drain energy which makes losing weight more difficult. A good tasting alternative is chick pea pasta. For a pasta that tastes like the real thing, try chick pea pasta. Most chick pea pasta will have about 23-25 g of protein and 13g of fiber (about 30% of recommended daily allowance) and 43 g net carbs vs 13g of protein, 3g of fiber, and 71 g net carb in regular pasta. Banaza Chick Pea Pasta should be available at Walmart and Chickpea Pasta is available in about 75% of the US. Simply adding fiber to your diet may be enough to help you lose weight (Annals of Internal Medicine), so make the switch and enjoy the benefits of Chick Pea Pasta. White Rice: Unfortunately, white rice has been refined and stripped of its fiber, antioxidants, and nutrients leaving it nothing more that empty carbs.. Brown rice is our normal replacement, since it is rich in nutrients. A lesser known options cauliflower. It takes just a few minutes to prepare and you will not be able to tell the difference from real rice. Chop up your cauliflower and the put it into a blender and or food processor and pulse until a rice like consistency is achieved. Crackers: Crackers are high in carbs (about 18g) and have no redeeming food value. Crackers simply widen our waists. For all you cracker lovers, an option worth trying is Mary's Gone Crackers Super Seed Classic Crackers or Mary's Gone Crackers Organic Super Seed Crackers. Mary's Classic crackers are made with quinoa, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, whole grain brown rice, flax and seaweed. You will find that each serving provides 450 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids, a nutrient that wards off metabolism-slowing inflammation, and that they are low cal. Mary's should be available at Walmart and you can order online. Muffins: Muffins are usually high in calories and sugar. You may have already been told that the best muffin is the one that you do NOT eat! Whether your muffin is made commercially or homemade, you can expect an about 400 to 520+ calories with about 15 to 20 g of fat! Consider a VitaTops Muffin Top instead. Their blueberry variety has only 120 calories with 5 grams of sugar. Vita Tops should be available at Target. Pancakes: Pancakes are another No No, with restaurant pancakes packing about 1000+ calories or about 60% of our calories for the day in one sitting. In addition, most pancakes are made with white flour, so they have been stripped of nutrients. Consider FlapJacked or similar brands, which offer high protein, high fiber alternatives at about 200 calories per serving and 20 g of protein. You should be able to find them at GNC, Target, and Walmart. Advertisement: continued... The WORST food for weight gain!
