What is BMR?
BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate.
Your basal metabolic rate or BMR is used
interchangeably with your resting metabolic rate (RMR).
What that means is that your BMR is refers to the minimum
number of calories required for basic functions at
rest. It is the amount of calories that our body
needs to function.
Since your BMR represents the lowest calorie number that
you need for your involuntary body functions, you should
NOT consume fewer calories than your BMR.
 What is a good BMR?
In general, about 60% of your total energy needs come from
resting metabolism. This varies, of course, depending on
your activity level as well as gender and age.
The average BMR for an American woman is around 1,400
calories, while for a man its about 1,800.
 How can you calculate your BMR?
There is an Equation which follows that you can use
to Calculate Your BMR.
Metric:
For Men
BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 x weight in kg) + (4.799 x height
in cm) - (5.677 x age in years)
Women: BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 x weight in kg) + (3.098 x
height in cm) - (4.330 x age in years)
Imperial
Men:
BMR = 66.47 + ( 6.24 × weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 ×
height inches ) − ( 6.755 × age in years )
Women:
BMR = 655.1 + ( 4.35 × weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 ×
height inches ) − ( 4.7 × age in years )
