Magician Penn Gillette of Penn and Teller.
The Mono Diet is one of the top searched diets. Freelee the Banana Girl, who eats only bananas for days at a time, is credited with its popularity.
The Mono is a diet where you eat one food and only one food. The food might be eggs or bananas or potatoes. Recently, Magician Penn Gillette of Penn and Teller kick started his diet with a two week 'Mono Diet'. For 14 days Gillette ate potatoes and only potatoes. The thinking behind the Mono Diet is that you will sever your relationship with food.
The experts are totally against the Mono Diet and for good reason. Even a short period of time on the mono diet will create problems.
“The desperation of wanting to lose weight — and see results quickly — will lead people to choose a plan that makes no biological sense,” said NBC News Health and Nutrition Editor Madelyn Fernstrom. “This is not an advisable plan.”
Why do some people choose the Mono Diet? In an effort to lose weight, some people will try anything. Although that kind of an attitude may be good, a Mono Diet will create deficiencies, and almost immediately.
In the case of eating only potatoes, for example, although potatoes are rich in vitamins and minerals they only provide you with about 20% of your daily protein. Gillette ate 5 potatoes per day (about 4g protein per potato) or 20g and a person his size needs about 100g of protein daily. What this means is that within 24 hours, your body begins to take the amino acids from your muscles. Within two weeks, a potato only diet can impact your brain which needs amino acids.
After the 14 days, Gillette added fruits, grains and vegetables. He now avoids animal products, sugar, salt, oil, and refined foods.
An unbalanced diet
Potentially harmful side effects
Constipation or diarrhea are probable
The Mono Diet is an unhealthy approach to dieting. I give it two thumbs down. There are so many other diets to choose from, do not even consider this diet.
Thank you for reading, my friends, I wish you much success on your weight loss journey.
