Military Diet Substitutes


What makes the Military Diet popular is that it allows you to eat vanilla ice cream and to drink coffee.

Nonetheless it is a strict diet.  On this diet you have 3 days at 1000 calories and 4 days at 1500 calories, so weight loss is imminent.

Military Diet Substitutes means following the Military Diet but allowing the swapping or substituting of foods. The substitutes are usually comparable in calories.  

There are 17 swaps that you can make.  It is suggested that you only make those swaps that you have to make...swap only foods that you hate or are allergic to or that you need to change to make the diet vegetarian, lactose free, or gluten free.

Original  Swap or Substitute
apples Apples Dried Apricots, Plums, Grapes, Pears, Zucchini,
bananas Bananas 2 Kiwis, 2 Apricots, Cup of Papaya
bead Bread 1/4 cup yogurt with 1/2 cup flax seeds, protein bar, 1/2 cup whole grain cereal
broccoli Broccoli Any green veggie (spinach, broccoli, asparagus)
carrots Carrots Celery, beets, squash, bell pepper, parsnip
cheddar Cheddar Cottage Cheese, Ham, Eggs, Soy Cheese/ milk, Tofu, Cabbage
coffee Coffee Green Tea with optional no sugar hot chocolate, Sugar free Red Bull
cottage cheese Cottage Cheese Plain Greek yogurt, Cheddar Cheese, Ham, Ricotta Cheese, Tofu
eggs Eggs 2 slices of bacon, small glass of milk, 1/4 cup seeds or nuts, chicken wing
grapefruit Grapefruit Mix I/2 tsp in a glass of water
green beans Green Beans Tomatoes, spinach, lettuce
hot dogs Hot dogs Vegetarians:  Portobello mushrooms, tofu dogs, soy dogs, beans, lentils
Non Veg: Bratwurst, Deli Meat, Turkey dogs, Luncheon meat
ice cream cones vanilla Ice Cream Cup of fruit flavored yogurt, glass of apple juice
steak Meat Beans, lentils, tofu, portobello mushrooms
peanut butter on bread Peanut Butter Hummus, Sun flower seed butter, pumpkin butter, soy butter, almond butter
saltines Saltines Rice Cakes
tuna grilled Tuna Tofu, Chicken, Cottage Cheese, Almonds, Peanuts, Grilled Sushi Grade Tuna

Conclusion:

Most proponents of the Military Diet seem convinced that you should not make any substitutes, unless you have to.  

Losing weight is based on substituting or swapping poor food choices with better ones.  If you make substitutes, as long as you keep the calories about the same, your weight loss results should not change.
