Ketosis Diet | Ketogenic Diet

The Ketogenic Diet is a diet designed to treat hard to control epilepsy in children.

How does the Ketogenic Diet work?

The principle of this diet is to create a high level of ketones in the blood which is known as ketosis.  The Ketogenic diet is high in fat and low in carbohydrates which promotes fat burning instead of carbohydrates.  When carbs are burned they are converted into glucose, but low carbs means that the liver converts fat into ketone bodies and fatty acids.  These ketone bodies replace the glucose as energy for the brain which leads to a reduction in epileptic events.  

The Ketogenic diet was created in the 1920's, but its popularity waned in the 1930's with the introduction of anti convulsive drugs.  In the mid 1990's, Jim Abrahams, a Hollywood producer, whose son's seizures were controlled by this diet, set up the Charlie Foundation to promote the Ketogenic Diet.

Positives:

A reduction in epileptic seizures in children
Weight Loss
It has been shown to help depression, migraine headaches, autism, polycystic ovary syndrome and diabetes mellitus type 2 in small case studies.
In animal studies it is believed to have benefited ALS, Alzheimer's Disease, and Parkinson's Disease and has even been suggested as a cancer treatment.

Negatives:

The Ketogenic Diet has some side effects.in children.

Short term side effect:s

Constipation is common.
Low grade acidosis
Hypoglycemia if there is an initial fast

Long term side effects:

Stunted growth
bone fractures
Kidney stones

In adults, common side effects are:
Constipation
Higher cholesterol levels
Menstrual irregularities in women
Weight loss

Conclusion:

The Ketogenic Diet is NOT a balanced diet and only contains small amounts of fruit and vegetables.  Although this diet does have a side effect of weight loss, long term use creates an adverse effect on bone health and a probability of kidney stones.  When comparing these side effects to the side effects of an anti convulsant for an epileptic child . the diet should win.  When comparing this diet against other 'healthy' diets that are easier to follow, we feel that the Ketogenic Diet loses.  

As a weight loss diet, I give it a thumbs down!  

FYI:  There are many other diets that might suit you better, just to name a couple that are similar but safer, would be a modified Atkins Diet or Dr. Kelly Ann Petrucci's Broth Diet.
