The Eco Diet or the Eco Atkins Diet is a variation of the Atkins Diet.  The Eco Atkins Diet is a vegetarian form of the Atkins Diet.  Both the Atkins Diet and the Eco Atkins Diets are based on a low carb platform and the theory that a low carb diet is better for your health.  It can also be adapted as a vegan diet.

How Does It Work?

The Eco Atkins Diet relies on swapping high protein plant foods for meat choices which are considered to be a fatty and less healthy food option.    The diet calls for 31 percent of daily calories to come from plant proteins, 26 percent from carbs and 43 percent from plant fats.  

The original Atkins Diet has been shown to reduce insulin resistance and increase good HDL (good cholesterol), but had no effect on bad cholesterol.  The Eco Atkins is a result of a study done by St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto, Canada. The hospital invented the Eco Atkins diet which kept  the same ratio of protein and carbs as the original Atkins diet,  however, they replaced the high-fat animal protein with vegetable protein.  47 overweight candidates were put on a vegetarian  diet with eggs and dairy or the Eco Atkins diet.  After 4 weeks, bot diets led to an 8.8 lb. average weight loss, but the Eco Atkins saw the best reduction in bad cholesterol (0.6%).

high quality vegetable oils,

soy products,
beans,
eggs and dairy

You will need to plan and prepare meals.
Most experts feel that vegan and vegetarian diets can lack vitamins and minerals

Yes.  You should lose weight as well as improve your health.

Conclusion:

The Eco Atkins Diet has been proven to help you to lose weight and improve your health markers.  Both the vegetarian and vegan versions are difficult, which may be good reason to exclude this from your list of diet choices.  I give this diet a thumbs up, however, I do not recommend it, because of its level of difficulty.
